A Man He No Longer Recognizes

A man can give away a lot of himself trying not to be judged.

Usually, it does not happen all at once.

One agreement.

One silence.

One compromise at a time.

He lets something pass because the argument does not seem worth having.

He goes along because he does not want to be difficult.

He keeps quiet because approval feels easier than friction.

None of those decisions may look important by themselves.

That is what makes them dangerous.

A man rarely wakes up one morning and decides to abandon what he believes.

More often, he trades small pieces of himself for acceptance.

Eventually, the people around him may be comfortable.

They may approve.

They may even call him easy to get along with.

And he may no longer recognize the man they are approving.

A man does not need to argue over everything.

But he should know which things cost too much to surrender.

That judgment matters.
